Majolica, also known as talavera, is one of the oldest forms of pottery produced in Mexico, tracing its origins through the colonial period back to the Renaissance in Spain and Italy. Mexican potters produce some of the most innovative pieces in this very long tradition and among these, Gorky Gonzalez is one the most highly acclaimed artisans currently working.
The production of majolica pottery is time-consuming and complicated. Each piece is first manually shaped on a potter's wheel, kiln fired, and then carefully decorated with natural mineral based paints. The painted piece is then fired a second time, fusing the paint with the glaze and giving the colors of majolica pottery their distinctive brightness.
