This exquisitely detailed lacquer tray comes to our shop from the small town of Olinala high in the mountains above the Pacific coast of Southwestern Mexico. A wandering vine motif provides compositional unity to the myriad animal, bird, and butterfly images that fill this gorgeous tray.
The tray measures 19 1/2" by 12". Olinala trays are quite durable and require only periodic treatment with furniture oil. For decorative use only.
Olinala in the state of Guerrero is the most important center of lacquer production in Mexico. Olinala lacquer traces its origins back to before the arrival of the Spanish and the techniques used today have survived largely intact from Pre-Columbian times.
